What Are the Social Security Disability Requirements?
You must meet Social Security Disability Requirements to determine whether your disability qualifies you to receive monthly cash benefits. Social Security Disability Requirements
If you are hoping to receive disability benefits, you should be aware of the Social Security Administration’s disability requirements. You must have a medical impairment that is considered a disabling condition. The SSA also requires that you provide the correct information about your work history.
If you have any of the disabling conditions found on the Social Security Administration’s list of impairments, your chances greatly increase for receiving benefits. Conditions include Alzheimer’s Disease, respiratory and neurological impairments, and back pain, among many others.
Your work status also influences your chances of receiving monthly disability benefits. In 2010, if you are working and receive more than $1,000 each month, you do not currently meet the Social Security Disability requirements. If you have not worked for a year because your condition is severe enough to prohibit you from completing work-related duties, you could qualify for benefits.
Listed below are a few other guidelines for Social Security work status and disability requirements:
- Recent work test: You must have been employed five out of the last 10 years, but this does not necessarily mean five consecutive years.
- Duration of work test: You must meet the requirements set forth in this test, which includes the requirement that you paid into Social Security during your work history.
The Social Security Administration will also look at whether you can return to work or if you can successfully complete the tasks given in any other type of substantial and available employment. If you are unable to do so because of your condition, then you may be considered for disability benefits.
