Before You Apply For Disability
Although this understandably is a difficult time in your life, it is still imperative that you gather the necessary information for your Social Security Disability application. Part of knowing how to apply for disability is having an understanding of the definition of disability.
If you have a qualifying disability and you have contributed into Social Security, you will have met the standards laid out by the Social Security Administration to receive benefits.
The Social Security Administration will find you disabled if:
- Your medical condition prevents you from completing any substantial work
- Your specific medical condition or symptoms qualifies as a disability
- Your condition is severe and is expected to last for a minimum of one year, or result in your death
As you prepare your information, take the time to evaluate your ailments. Be sure to have the names and numbers of your treating physicians and all of your medical records. The Social Security Administration also requires that, at some point, you have paid into Social Security through former employment. The amount of time you were employed can affect this requirement.
