How the Social Security Administration Will Calculate Your SSDI Cash Benefits

Calculate Social Security Disability Benefits

SSDI Cash Benefit Calculation

Summary: The Social Security Administration (SSA) may award you cash benefits of over $2,000.00 per month (the average award is just over $1,000.00 per month). Cash awards are based upon your lifetime average earnings in addition to other adjusting factors including whether or not you are receiving Workers’ Compensation payments, or Public Disability payments.

One question many people ask before they apply for SSDI is “How much will I get in cash benefits?” The average SSDI cash benefits are in excess of $1,100 per month.  In addition you may qualify for a retroactive cash award and, after a waiting period, Medicare benefits.

Your monthly Social Security Disability Insurance benefits payments are based on your lifetime average earnings. Every quarter in your life that you have worked has contributed toward your SSDI benefits. To be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance cash payments you must have paid into the Social Security system and must now be earning below the level of Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). The SSA does not take into account how much income you have to date when deciding your case; only the amount you are currently making is used to determine your eligibility. If you are currently receiving Workers’ Comp payments (including Black Lung payments) or Public Disability payments the SSA may reduce the amount you receive, but other income does not affect your payment amount.

If your medical condition improves and you are able to return to work, your benefits will not stop immediately. Beneficiaries are given a Trial Work Period (TWP) consisting of nine out of a given sixty consecutive months. During the TWP you are allowed to make up to $670 per month in addition to still receiving benefits. However, if your monthly income exceeds this amount, your benefits will cease immediately.

In addition to a TWP, the SSA also provides beneficiaries with a period of extended eligibility. For the first thirty-six consecutive months following your TWP you are able to begin receiving cash benefits again if your monthly income falls below $780 without having to file a new claim.
